Abstract | A formative assessment can provide a snapshot of what a student knows and is able to do. It can include written tests, performance tasks, formal or informal questioning, or teacher observations embedded in a unit of study. The information gathered from formative assessments is then interpreted and used to further student learning. Such assessment practices provide information about where students are and need to be, as well as give teachers an opportunity to offer immediate feedback on how to get there. While informal questioning and teacher observations are productive assessment techniques, a formative assessment (as used here) refers to the more formal practice of administering a task to students. This article offers six guideposts that are intended to provide general guidelines on how to use and think about formative assessments. (ERIC). |
